ALUMNI WEEK -Jun 19 AM -Aloha Friday

After we came back from the Royal Mausoleum, we watched a slide show with music of photos taken from prep school to our senior year. Mahalo to Pat and Pammy for all the time and efforts in putting that together.

Following that slide show, we watched a “Remembering our Classmates” DVD with back ground music to the tune “If He Carried The World” by the Mana’o Company. There were photos of each classmate who passed on.

Jack, Richard, Jeanine, Kammy, Back: Rita, little of Alexis, Mugs Akiona, Nalei and Lenson.

After this portion was over, we went upstairs and the spread of food available was just outstanding. Salad Bar, Main Dish options, even a whole roasted pig was laying on the table. The options were so plentiful.

Live music was non stop……..oldies and modern day tunes.

Happy Aloha Friday to our Imua69 Ohana……….

As we get older, it gets more special.
We are products of Bernice Pauahi’s love.
If you are used to coming as a couple, it must be tough to come alone.
You don’t have to sit down and speak to everyone…just seeing everyone brings joy.
Our Core Group Leaders have done much to keep our class connected and together the best that they can.
There are so many “givers” in our class.
We are now at a period in our lives to “think” about our LEGACY. What can we do to provide opportunities for young Hawaiian Children who may not be able to afford to go to Kamehameha.
We should think about a 60th Birthday Event and our 2014 – 45th Reunion! Let’s contact as many classmates as possible…….reality is…some of us may not make it to the big 50th….in 2019.

Being at the Kinau Hale again brought back some fond memories…… The night we were singing on the steps….. Doo Wopping………. ·

Donna’s sister Debbie was present also with their mom and her mother-in-law….. Trying to check the photo files …. Cannot find so far.

DJ holding up her a’ama crab… the king of the rock, king of the concrete slab…. In 1999, DJ purchased her first ukulele….today, she is an accomplished ukulele virtuoso….. Greg and DJ came in on Tuesday and enjoyed the activities and all the great times at the dorm.

Again, being at the dorms….sitting on the lanai, talking story….playing music….those moments…. Priceless.

Bridget “Pua” Ruane and Wadseley…..excuse if the spelling is off. What a very special and nice man……..

Pua was one of the hard working people at the dorms…. Mahalo Pua for your time and efforts.

Of course, if there was an Electric Slide, or a to the right, to the right, to the left, or any dance going on with music, Pua was there on the floor. Soooooooo much energy!!!

If anyone get email addresses for Penny, Mala, Richard, Barbara, etc, etc… Please ask them if we can keep in touch with them also. We missed the opportunity to ask them.

Kahu Cordell Kekoa was one of the “lunas” for the people serving the food trays. His class will celebrate their 30 year reunion next year.

ALUMNI LUAU - 6-17 Dinner Update

This photo get plenty “action” inside. Charley and Layne Soon standing and speaking to Curtis Wilmington and Robert Young…Robert’s head to us.

To the right, you can see Barbara Sawyer, the class “shyest person” …next to Barbara, you can see the slight partial of Trudy Wong Jackson….. Next to Trudy’s head to the right is Clyde Tamanaha.

Now go to Charley’s right arm, just left is the back of B.R. (Brudder Roy)…that is Faithy’s head next to me and walking by the pipe is Pammy Nakoa.

How is that for a photo with plenty action… Wow, my shoulders is broad eh? Good thing you cannot see my okole, which is “broader.”

Tuddie and Kammy Purdy…… It takes a lot of effort to get Tuddie down from that tree and off the island. Tuddie loves the gatherings of our class. Behind Tuddie and Kammy, you can see the back of Alan Kumalae…..Just to Alan’s left side is Scott Rogers and his wife Deena…….. To the left edge, Bill Berman’s wife. Tuddie and I saved our “1969” sign for souveniers.

Those table cloths that covered the tables were for sale for $15.00. The Monkey Pod Bowls with the Alumni Logo were for sale also……. The Kulolo, Haupia and fresh pineapples were so ono too.

Some of you have written that this is motivating you to come to the next reunion. Actually, the motivation will just fade away for most of you. You need to internalize the thoughts and ardently see yourself making it because it will make you happy.

It took Faithy and I 30 years to first hook up with the class and now, we are rock solid in our commitment to serve. When someone gets ill…we will be there with our prayers. When someone needs help…we'll do our best.

Actually, a few years ago, one of our classmates needed some help with a funeral…We got in and put our shoulders to the wheel. We planned the entire funeral with ushering, program planning and participation, refreshments and more. The feeling of aloha and service is so great.

And finally tonight…..Robert Young, his wife, Mrs. Young and Sheri Akiona Adams…..

We should have our classmates come in and perform on stage in 2014 or 2019…..wow…..10 years ago is some work for some of us with borderline bad health or “heart” already. We get Keola B, Jerry S., Jon O. George K., Dwight H., Peter M., Charlene B., Haunani, get more. We have hula dancers…kumu hula…. Hoku P., Sheri, Susan, U’i, Kauanoe, Nalei, Rita, Bobby Lu***, (*** depending on wine supply)

Okay PAU4NAU. KAPALAMA KUP is this Friday folks. We hope our class will be well represented….

Aloha Kakahiaka Braddah Roy and Faithy aka, The Hui O Horners, Thank you for the wonderful updates and pictures….I new that I wanted to be there and I couldn’t but your sharing with me and others sure helps me to feel a little connection to all that was experienced…missed opportunity…..I am certainly looking forward to whatever comes first……. Be it 60th or 45th… or maybe we need to celebrate the end of the 50’s.. Like our 59th Birthdays. After that the 60’s truly is beginning of a new era for all of us. I can’t event imagine being 60….. but now that my mom has passed on and I am that eldest generation….Kupuna standings are mine….we need to keep linked to our past and truly wonderful friendships… You have all done a marvelous job of staying connected and I’m sorry that I have allowed myself to be disconnected…..but there is no time like the present and better late than never…… Thank you so much for all of your love and energy……you are great appreciated and I look forward to my 3 updates daily…..have a blessed day……….Love, Arma-Lee

Aloha Roy! Received your message! Yikes! Reflections? You know me. I always have a wonderful time with my classmates! Never enough time to do it all. Totally enjoyed all of the activities that Kamehameha planned. Manu Boyd gave a presentation on chanting and the history of hula etc. Kamehameha's archivist was passionate about her job. She loves Kamehameha and said that this school and all that it stands for is our sovereignty. I never thought about Kamehameha in that way. The Taste of Kamehameha, Talent Night, Class Night, the Luau, Shopping,etc.etc.etc. Great, great activities with wonderful people. Too many good times to reflect on. It's like what my husband always tells people. "You cannot imagine what Bobby's classmates mean to each other. It's a cultural thing that is unique. No one will ever experience what these classmates experience every time they get together."Love you Roy and Faithy! Nancy and Janice. Thank you for all that you do. ALUMNI LUAU - 6-17 Lunch Update

Richard Kuaana, Roz, Robert Kalaluhi and Alexis Cheong stop for a Kwik-Pose….

Richard lives in Moanalua and has access to all these beautiful plants and flowers. He is an expert in flower arrangements….Our dorm was always adorned with these fresh flower arrangements throughout.

It was great meeting up with Robert who contacted us nearly a month before the reunion….

Linda Kapuniai Rosehill and her husband Bill with Noa Chong standing. To those who have never been to the Alumni Luau…..you find your section with the signs posted. (Class of 1969) You sit, talk story, take photos…..listen to music, and then you are served by the class who is preparing to have their 30th year the following year.

Long lines of servers walking out in an orderly manner with the trays of food and a “luna” guiding them and laying the plates before you. After all are served, the extra foods are brought out and you are asked if you want more of what is left as they carry it.

In a plastic covered see through tray, they had the cakes, fresh pineapples, haupia and kulolo….these were spread throughout the tables.

Joe and Julie Ellen find time to chat. There was a “country store” with all kinds of produce and other items and other booths selling all kinds of gift items…. Kamehameha Souvenir Items by the Alumni Office, signature items from Golf Shirts, Caps, etc………

Quilted Blankets, pillow cases, table covers and much more.

There was a water-hole booth with drinks, water, soda….you purchase the scripts and but all the drinks you want. Great entertainment and at the end of the night……we sang the School Song and while people were catching the bus back to their cars and dorms, “Kapena” entertained live at the west side of the tents. Priceless evening.

A couple of you have written in the last couple of days, “where is Walt?” Walt is one of our Core Group Leaders and he was on a trip to Wash. D.C. for his work. We missed him too. Here, is 2 of wee3kaneakua.com Eda and their beautiful daughter Emily.

Walt introduced our talent presentation in 1999 (find the video) and is the person that reads the names of those who have passed on at the Sunday Memorial Service. This year, Pat & Pammy filled in and did a great job.

Since coming back from Alumni Week, I have sent about nearly “18” messages of reflections and so far, no one went ask to be removed. LUAU PHOTOS - Jun 17 AM

Mala, Penny and Anna Hooper Fosdick, pose for a photo….. Class signs were posted on the tables. We had a pretty good section just east of the stage. Like the emcee said, those classes who paid for their tickets early got some great seats close to the stage and we had some good seats.

The guy with the back showing back of Anna was Sidney Keli’ipuleole. His birthday was the day before I believe.

We had a great time.

Flying in from Kona was Clyde Tamanaha and his wife Lillian. He brought his mom and his two brothers who also graduated from Kamehameha.

Also joining us at the luau was Bill “Makapu’u” Berman with his wife Mary. (Bill…i am going by pure memory……..)

Bill is still down at the Pearl Harbor Shipyard and he loves his work.

We were asked to be at the Konia field by 415pm for picture taking at 430pm. We mentioned early that the food was great. The Pupu table had “no end.” Eat all you can. They were changing some of the pupu dishes every half and hour.

ALUMNI WEEK - 6-16 Am Update

Facilities were opened during the week. Many of the alumni from the various classes took advantage of going to get some sun and exercise at the pool. Bobby Lu’s brother was one of the Life Guard’s on duty.

Always great to see everyone!! To those of you who missed it, I hope that these segments of email updates have been able to help you get a little “feel” for what we experienced.

We have not received the “official” best photos yet. Those photos are still in Mililani and has not hit the airwaves yet!

Once I got to the luau, I parked myself at a table facing the stage and that was it for the evening. I should have, could have, wished I would have gone around to take photos of everyone by couples and families but I didn’t. “Missed Opportunity” you might say. I just took in the entertainment from the beginning to end. It was great seeing those who came. We missed seeing lots of others but hope there will be opportunities again down the road.

ALUMNI WEEK - 6-15 Late Update

When U’i pau fix that second hip, we need to invite them to dance a hula or two for us. He Ali’i and Wahine Ilikea……..

There are some classmates who came this past reunion that we never took the time to ask them about their email addresses. If anyone knows of how we can connect with Richard K, Susan Akau Naki, Victoria Souza, Barbara Sawyer, Trudy Wong….she gave me and it’s somewhere, Paul Apo, and some others……

This afternoon I was getting ready to close down, loading up our Quick Shade, folding tables, chairs and going to a Little League Baseball Game when Jeanine called from Hilo!! Walla!!!

Jeanine says she does not like to travel to Honolulu but her sister called her and told her she need to come to the Reunion to see her Aunty who is a member of the class of ‘1949…….. Her sister Natalie got her air ticket, and she was literally “forced to get out of her home and come.”

Bottom line is that she is so so happy that she came and felt so much aloha from so many of you. She said, “I saw this Hawaiian woman at the Royal Mausoleum and I went up to her and asked her who she was…….she said her name was ‘Faith’…Faith Kamaka. We just hugged and hugged…so happy to see her. We started in kindergarten…in different classes but the same time.”

Jeanine said to tell you mahalo for your aloha, and embracing her with so much love. She said she is looking forward to the next ten years! I told her we don’t wait that long. We got our 60^th birthday and 45^th year reunion in 2014! Boy, she is going to work on plugging in for the 45^th……… “I don’t have email or computer so you can mail me anything important please?” …..okay Jeanine….I will be printing some of the messages from last week.

THE KAPALAMA KUP is on for Friday, June 19^th…… Just spoke to Tuddie!

He is flying down on Friday morning…….picking up a rent a car, stopping at Curtis house, and then meeting up with the golfers at Hawaii Kai.

Tuddie has been one of the “icons” at this tournament each year. He makes sure the classmates are “hydrated” and have pupus during the tournament.

Tuddie is talking story with Grant Davidson, Hano’s brother who served as “designated driver” for Hano on Saturday evening.

Part of Nancy’s birthday present was to have her family, including her one and only “mo’opunua” join her at the dorm on Saturday evening…..

Cute little grandson and I forget his name. It was……I better not try it.

Victoria Souza came all the way from Arizona too. I just watched the 30^th Reunion Video before sending it off today and noticed a few people missing on our 40^th…… Some people could not make it because of Graduation. Those who came for one night, two hours, two nights, four hours……just your presence….mahalo to you! Some of you were away…I mean away from the island. What’s next? Significant Possible Future Events or Activities: Our 60^th Birthday in 2011, our 45^th Reunion in 2014^th. Setting some long range goals for 2019….or the 50^th reunion. Hmmm….time for one more photo.

This was the best part. Sitting down, talking story at the dorm. Just listening to the voices, the laughters….that was great. Kauanoe, Lady in blue, Nalei, Uilani, Pat, Pammy and Rita by the table with the green.

Three of you wrote it to me asking what my reflections were. Ouwee! I was sending emails all last week about my reflections. Actually, you wanted my David Letterman Top 10 List? Faithy and I discussed some of our highlights early one morning. Maybe in a day or two.

Yes, we have a list of things…the greatest we feel is this “unconditional love” coming from all of you. It’s a feeling that when we come home, we get the “blues” because we miss everyone. It’s the efforts made by those to help us have a wonderful experience by creating a great environment, great food, and a feeling of service to others. By those like Charlie Soon whom we have prayed for especially going through that kidney transplant……he making that extra effort to come and be with us. U’ilani, with her painfully sore hip, surgery coming up very soon…….walking with her cane from the dorm down to Konia field and back up after. It was watching how sensitive Simeon was in helping her down the steps and making sure she had each foot planted firmly on the ground with each step.

Get plenty to say……don’t have enough time right now. Mahalo. PAU4NAU.

IT'S ALOHA FRIDAY -June 12

Aloha. I am sending a short, “It’s Aloha Friday” message tonight (Thurs) because Faithy and I will be off island from tomorrow morning. (Grandson made the Little League All Stars so we going watch) So… last comments of Alumni Week.

Mostly everyone went to bed early on Saturday night, and that is about 1145pm to about 130am…. In the morning, a woman playing a uke walked down the halls and sang, “Good Morning, Aloha…kakahiaka….”…She had a beautiful voice but I don’t know who she was.

By 6:30am, people were loading up their cars outside of the dorm. Our room was all cleaned and cleared by 715am….Yes, early. We said some good byes, hung around a little while…..Then we thought we go to the Memorial Chapel….”hello…..Faithy and I were the first in the parking lot.” Only the maintenance people were there cleaning the yard, weedwhacking, blowing the leaves…Food Service came in, brought juice, water, coffee and some nibbles.

We pretty much sat in the same area as a class. Pat and Pam represented us by reading the names of those who have passed on. We all stood up while the names were read. George Ferreira’s sister Gretchen and her son Alika sat with us.

This was the final event for Alumni Week.

We had to leave before the closing hymn and prayer in order to return our vehicle and check in on time for our travel back to Moloka’i.

Faith had a three day girls camp that started on Tuesday morning. I had a friend’s daughter’s luau on that Tuesday, and preparation for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor which was held tonight. We busy…even though we live here.

Reflection on the 40^th Reunion – June 2009

“What Have I Learned?” by Charlie Soon

From the obvious physical changes as in hair color to the less obvious changes in attitudes, traits and character, I saw how time stood still for some and how others were blessed by its passage.

I listened intently to the hearts of classmates, friends and family as they spoke of their paths in life, the season they were in, and their evolution into the person they are today. I learned what was significant in their lives and what expectations they had as they looked ahead toward the time when we would meet again.

I learned how compassionate my classmates are as they wholeheartedly give of themselves to lend a hand to others. Through my own journey, there are classmates that walked beside me in sickness and in health, prayed for me and with me, and sacrificed their time to be with me throughout each challenge. These are the classmates that have shown me the true meaning of friendship. These are the classmates that I have learned to trust and love. These are the classmates that continue to inspire me.

The memorial service that honored those that have passed into eternity left a deep impression upon me as I wondered, “Am I up for the next roll call?” I then reflected upon my life and realized that there is a time for every season under heaven. A time to die is one of them. I know I am here by the grace of God so I vow to make the most of each day following our good Lord Jesus Christ with every last breath.

To the special men and women of the Class of 69, their spouses, friends and families, the light of Christ shines brightly through each of you -- for all of you share in God’s grace with me. Thank you for sharing your hearts with me. I have been blessed by you.

I've been enjoying your recaps daily, and look forward to more. I love the pics so far, (except the one of my Mom, ha.) She was no doubt looking for me, because I disappeared to chat with friends. She so enjoyed all the ono food, the music, atmosphere, etc. I kept getting pupus for her, and whatever she didn't eat went in her purse (kupuna-style) to take home, ha.

My Son Casey enjoyed the luau too, and meeting some of the classmates.

You know Roy, I have so many words to say about our gatherings, because

they are always so special, fun and memorable. Mahalo nui loa to Pam, Pat,

Simeon, Lorraine, Jan, Dan, Nancy & families for always being so generous

with their time and talents. The food was so so awesome! T-shirts fab, and

Finally got to see Lurline after many years, and listen to her interesting stories of our ancestors. Tuddie, so cute and funny, always with a smile (& Cammie looking sassy with her new figure!). The Always fun girls & Mustang Sally dancers Pua, Donnette, Bobby Lu, crazy Lani, made the dorm after hours enjoyable. It was so good to see Charley Soon, still so handsome. Jeanine Oana was a nice surprise too. To my long time "four square" buddy Kimo, you bring us laughter with your wit. Aloha to girlfriends Roz, Vannelle, Alexis, Ui & Nalei, & guy friends Mugs, Randy & Alfred W. such nice guys to be around...and to all the others who brought their life stories, professional backgrounds, and simply their presence with smiles/hugs....mahalo. Our lives are richer having spent the time together...may we be blessed with more gatherings for years to come.

Friday morning, Penny Kamoku, Carolyn Malakaua, Lani Bowman and myself walked down to the Admin Bldg. to join in on the Bingo/Trivia session. We sat at the table and since we were a little late, we were told to quickly select a "leader" and proceed to answer the trivia questions on the paper before us. While we tried to focus our eyes and read the questions, one of the other tables stood up and started singing "Sons of Hawaii". At the bottom of the page, the final question was if you knew the correct words to the second verse of Sons of Hawaii. If so, you had to stand up and sing it. Well, we knew right then that we were out of contention as none of us knew the words. But we did answer all the other questions. And guess what?! We got every one right!!! I wish I had saved the paper to share with all of you.

Alaka`i was our illustrious hostess and she had us in stitches.

Good morning, Here are a few more pics from the reunion...

First, Nancy gets a foot rub from her #3 son Ailoa. I must say, her sons were all very attentive to their mom and the love they have for her was very evident. I have known Kamalu and Mikimiki since they were born. Ailoa was just a baby when I moved to the Big Island, during which time Mikala was born. I finally got to meet Mikala and Friday night he was the charmer, asking Mom to dance. Me too.

We had a few late night kanikapila sessions.

Thursday, after the Talent Show, George Kahumoku joined us on the steps of Kinau Hale and where he and Peter Medeiros shared some great slack key.

This picture is from Friday night. It's about 2:30 a.m. Roy came back outside with his ukulele and played some great oldies for us. Haunani and I joined in. I finally slipped away about 3:15. Yawn.

Of course it's always great to see my "partner in crime", Manu. She is still flying Hawaiian after 38 years! Whoa, you go girl!!! And gracing our presence was the beautiful Nani Zoller. TASTE OF KAMEHAMEHA

On Thursday, the “Taste of Kamehameha” was held from around lunch time. Each class was to make a dish which would be judged. Jan prepared her family recipe for “Gandule Rice”………while serving as our Dorm Luna, she was still able to prepare the dish with her helpers.

TO THE LEFT: It was “unreal”….after Mauna’ala, we got back to the dorm and Lenson took off his “tou’pe”, his glasses and changed into his yellow t-shirt to watch the slide show with us. I had to double take….Was unreal…..”JUST KIDDING.” This is Richard Kuaana. He was so gracious bringing fresh flowers to the dorm and decorating the place so nicely. Mahalo Richard!

MESSAGE FROM LENSON: [I took notes]

“I want to thank Nancy, her husband and her family and her support team for a great experience at the dorms. The food was out of this word fantastic, the music was great and may I say thank you very much for those classmates who came up to me to say hello and give me a hug. That made me feel so good.

I also would like to thank Pat & Pam Nakoa and Jack Hao for befriending me and letting me know about the class gatherings. We are getting older and we need to give plenty aloha to each other as classmates. Mahalo to you all! Please thank Blossom for coming up to me once at the Danny Couch show about five months ago…. I was called up to sing and dedicated Blue Darling to her as one of my classmates from Kamehameha. Pua and Wadsley enjoy the slide show put on by Pat Nakoa. It was awesome! Total time invested to put it together must have been at least 20 hours of research, travel time, editing, etc.

I have been going off on this summary of Alumni Week. I hope those of you who don’t care to read don’t mind. This will end soon. I had so much to say but being the shy person that I am, I couldn’t say it out right at the dorm. Plus, I like share some of my photos with you fellas.

Manu and Bobby Lu are so “awed” by the food. This was the first of their four plates for the night…… Faithy and I cannot say enough about the variety of food at Class Night.

We got home from a little league game and learned that “Duke Bainum” Honolulu Councilman just died last night of an “Aorta Aneurysm” He was only 56 years old and appears to be fit. Not over-weight. ALUMNI WEEK - WED PM

I AM HEADED to a 4pm Little League Baseball Game….just like Monday afternoon. For this reason, the “dinner update” on Alumni Week is coming out now.

The handsome young gentlemen in the photo to the left is non other then classmate Lenson Sonoda, aka Lenson Alan – Stage Name. As you can tell he is still a very handsome young man and with all black from shoes to hair, he look like someone like John Rowles or Danny Couch. Next to him in back is Leinaala Mau and to the front, Penny Kamoku. Beautiful women!

He is a travel agent and entertainer. We went back to the dorms later and after our class meeting, and watching of the slide show, he sang a few selections with the band. Wow….awesome stage presence. He gave me his card and said to please give him a call…….. Called Monday, “voice mail full.” Tuesday and Today…. “voice mail full”…….wow, must be fans calling in and leaving plenty messages. Awesome!

Friday Class Night……The Food, The Pupus, The Salad, Sushi, Desserts Bars…..was like MAGIC! Nancy & Mike, Lorraine and Sam and the others who did so much for all of us….. it was so awesome. ROCKET2PLUTO!!!

To the left: The “Salad Committee” Healthy kind salad…… with fresh vegetables and other stuffs. We got back from Mauna’ala and they were in the kitchen making the preparations.

It was awesome to have Jeanine Oana Kiko come from Hilo to join in with us!! She had a great time!! I called her a month or more ago and she wasn’t too “shua” but she was there! Awesome eh?

Some of us get some engine trouble already….some parts need work on or replacement……going be a challenge to make it to 2019. Time waits for no one. I want to say Mahalo Nui to all of you who participated in the planning and executing of our 40th Class Reunion. It was an absolutely wonderful experience full of laughter, tears, excitement, anticipation, hugs and kisses. From the moment of arrival, faces beamed with big smiles. Each embrace told you how much you were missed and how much it meant to be seen again. I tried my best to make every moment count and make up for all the events I missed in between 2004 and now.

Nancy, my dear friend, you work so hard. But your ability to provide us with a classy, well-planned week was, I hope, worth it. Class Night was "da bomb" - excellent food, beautiful setting and great music! And being there to celebrate your birthday was the icing on the cake (no pun intented).

Wayne, you did it again. You continue to keep that bar set high for Talent Night. I hope we made you proud. Thank you for all your time and hard work to get us ready and lead us to victory, again. And an especially big mahalo to you and Lurline for the chicken-skin excursion to Mauna`ala. It was indeed, very special. I learned much and that memory will be with me a long time (I hope.)

Janice, thanks for being our "dorm mother" again. You fulfill that role with excellence and we so appreciate you giving your time for us. Your gandule rice was so ono. How you found time to do that to I'll never know.

And to Pat and Pam, love the t-shirts, and the video presentation was so professional. Thank you for your many hours of hard work to make that presentation so worth seeing. Let us know when we can order copies (hint, hint).

And a very special mahalo to Mike Souza, Nancy's husband, and Janice's ever present sweetheart, Dan. They worked exceptionally hard to keep everything going smoothly. They never complained. They just kept going, and going, and going. Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo.

I've been checking my photos and, unfortunately, many of my pictures are very dark (because lolo me didn't take time to read da directions for my new camera and I couldn't find da flash button!) ALUMNI WEEK-WED AM

We say “aloha” to Bobby Lu who stayed in the dorm at Kinau Hale the “entire week.” Talk about stamina. She said that the workshops during the week were great! They started off with the opening ceremonies at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Memorial Chapel and she attended other events. Again, the “hangouts” on the lanai with our classmates were the highlights. (And shopping)

She is headed home to Oregon where her very “lonely” husband awaits her. Mahalo to Penny, DJ & Greg, Victoria, Laulani and Linda for coming all the way from America. Now I am thinking…. Did I miss anyone? Ed? Ouch!!

Making “the most” of their time at our 40^th was Tuddie & Kammy Purdy of Purdy’s MacNut Grove, Ho’olehua………. I asked Tuddie what the “highlight” for him. He did not hesitate……….

CLASS NIGHT was his highlight. The experience at the Royal Mausoleum, learning the history from Wayne and Lurline. Coming back and watching the Slide Show of the Class from 7^th to 12^th Grade, the Remembering of those who have passed on with awesome scenes and music. Recognizing Kauanoe and her achievements in the Hawaiian Language movement.

Then, CLASS NIGHT. The food was just awesome! The variety of food, salads, desserts…..Cannot miss. The band played our kind of music from the pass and today’s hits. CLASS NIGHT!! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!! “If you can come only one time, choose class night” Tuddie said seeing Charlie Soon was BIG………….

TUDDIE then said to get the “FULL EFFECT” staying in the dorms, waking up with classmates and saying good night to classmates. The “hanging around” talking story….. Always get pupus around with water, beverages. He was impressed for the Honolulu Core Group and all the work done in our behalf. Food, dorm maintenance, ice!

Laulani, aloha! Did you find your camera?? You left and then someone said, “I think Laulani forgot her camera.” At that point, I looked for a phone booth to change my clothes because the only way I could catch you was to fly with my BIG “S” Cape.

But you were too fast. We waited at the top of the parking but no signs of you. Anyway, we hope you got your camera back and it was great seeing you again. If some of you can remember, Faithy and I came to our first reunion in 1999 because we were praying for Laulani from the year before. Tuddie told us that she was very very ill. Then he told us she was coming for the 30^th and being the maha’oe people we are, we went to take a look for ourselves. Okay. What a REUNION! Priceless!! Aloha to you all from………..

ALUMNI WEEK-TUES Dinner Report

Aloha Roy,

Thank you for posting such wonderful photos of our time together for our 40th reunion. You asked what we learned from this 40th reunion well, here are some things I learned.

1) No matter how much time goes by from the last time we see each other, we have a deep love and respect for each other.

2) Even though our core group has gotten smaller, we were able to make things happen.

3) Nancy is the champ of multi tasking. She was doing 4-5 major projects at the same time if not more.

4) Those who stayed in the dorms were right there willing and ready to do whatever work that needed to be done.

5) Other classes just love our class.

6) We got along just great with class of 1964 who we were sharing our dorm with.

I love our class. We have so many talented individuals, and they are so willing to share their talents with us. I had a wonderful time, and although good things always come to an end, the time spent with each other will always be forever in my mind and heart.

ALUMNI WEEK - TUES - PM UPDATE

It was great to be in the company of Wayne & Flora Wong again. Wayne is our class “Webmaster”…….. imua69.com Mahalo Wayne! Wayne is part of the Team that promotes the Slack Key Night in Maui and works together with George Kahumoku. And a Grammy Award Winner, a couple times over.

That is Roz with her back to us and the handsome gentleman in the back is non other than our Class Archive, Randy Tong. Randy has the most detailed and exquisite memory out of the whole bunch of us. The details that he remembers is astounding.

Again, I keep saying, it was the “hanging” at the dorms what was so much fun. Hearing the talking and laughters…..it was great!!

Trudy Wong Jackson, Susan Akau Naki, Vanelle Vanderford Love. Missing from photo but present. Barbara Sawyer. Barbara was the “Most Shyest” selected in our class. Someday, soon, she is going to feel comfortable and will step in to take a photo. Barbara was standing just to the side.

Hano Davidson arrived at the Luau, walked over to the section of tables with all of the “1969” signs……. He wondered where we all were. We were taking a class photo inside. He missed it. Ah shucks!!

It was great to see many others…..Stephen Wong was there early. We arrived and he was already half way into his pupu plates. Clyde Tamanaha was there early too! Great to see you Clyde. Sanford Manuia, Robert Young, Jenerl When you sit and write, hard to remember everything and everyone……. Zoller Uehara, Lynn Martinson, and others……..

Carol Desha Truman, Lani Bowman, Sheri Akiona Adams, Manu Simeona Meyers all listen and contemplate the words of Headmaster Michael Chun who spoke to our class.

Those of us who came to the 30^th Reunion (it was our very first time), this is the same dorm that we were in. If we in 2014 (Our 45^th) take heed and book early and have “numbers”, we can get this same dorm again. It’s a great dorm! Just a few minutes walk down to Konia Field and back.

Since we have been home, we have spoken to a few of you and the feeling has been the same…..we are so grateful that we made the choice to come, despite having the conflict of schedule with the Molokai High Graduation. Perhaps we will try to come a few days early next time. We want to make it in 2014. We can’t wait until then and hope that we as a class will be able to come together next summer and for our 60^th birthday year in 2011. Until the next time, aloha!

Mahalo nui to all our hard working leaders and the planning team that met and organized yet another memorable year for us, our 40th (kanahā!) year reunion. We are all blessed.

I am especially grateful to you all for the lūlū kālā for our program at Nawahiokalaniopuu. (Mahalo Wayne and the gang for the idea.) Our language belongs to us all, whether we speak a little or alot. It belongs to our aina, our people and all those who call Hawaii home. We are making some progress but there is so much left to do. Our children will carry our language and culture forward for their babies and generations to come. Can not give up! If our class meets on Hawaiʻi one year, we can plan a visit to the school.

ALUMNI WEEK - Tue - Breakfast Report

We were honored to have some of the parents of classmates present. In this photo, taken from a far distance with my “zoom lense”, is a photo of Penny Parker Emmon’s mom and her son Casey! Casey attends the UH and is enjoying being a member of a dance band. Clyde Tamanaha and Debbie Ono were able to bring their moms also.

The entertainment at the luau included the Kawika Trask Trio, the Men’s Glee Club, Holonape, Ho’okena and at the end for the clean up music, “Kapena”.

People got up and danced the hula! Some of the people danced the hula on the side, in the dark. The table cloths which were blue and white Hawaiian print and “fitted” on the tables were for sale [when pau]. The Monkey Pod Bowls, with the fresh wipes, napkins, spoons and forks, with Hawaiian salt and round onions with the Alumni Logo were also for sale. Pre-Sale Monkey Pod Bowls did well.

This beautiful woman from the Class of 49 (which makes her around 78 years old right?) danced the hula about the limu. If you know this hula, it’s lots of movement and going low. Man, she was so awesome!!

Pupu: There was some smoke deer meat, a’ama crab, kuhonu crab, poke aku, poke enenue, limu ogo (yikes), tako poke, boiled peanuts, edamane, pickled onions & peppers, and that is all I can remember. What was awesome is that they had so much to feed 1,800 people. You could go back over and over. If you had no tickets, the Pupu table would give you enough. They were generous on the poi too.

The servers did a great job coming around with the food while we all sat down. Men’s rest room…never had a line. Konia Hall lav had about 12 urinal and 6 toilets. Was awesome…you talk inside and the restroom SO LONG……. [my wife will say, ‘you had to add that in eh’] Just trying to give a “full recap.”

AFTER THE LUAU, we went back to the dorm. And again, this was the best part. “Hanging……..” Sitting on the lanai, “catching up and talking story……” Then all that food that was up there. Warmers with laulau, King Crab legs, sushi, sashimi platters, poke.…on and on……….. It was Nancy and Lorraine’s Birthday on Saturday. Mike’s group played awesome music…..Her son “Mikey” played drums……. They had three part harmony songs. Alaka’i, KPOA’S radio personality from Maui was the emcee at the luau….she came up to shared some time with us. There were a small group of about “6” 1999 grads that came. (They had one guy represent them in the talent, as a comedian) They came to the steps and asked if they can come and check how a 40 year class reunion would look like. We allowed them to join us to observe. Uncle Mike Chun came up and asked to speak to the whole class. We stopped the music and he gave us his message. It was very “touching.”

We were pacing ourselves. Better get to bet early tonight. I started my moon walk to the room at about midnight and up at 5:30am when a woman with a uke was singing, “Good morning, Aloha Kakahiaka”. We were all checked out of the dorm by 740am or so. Some of us attended the Memorial Service while Pat and Pammy read the names of 23 men and 6 women who have gone beyond the veil. 2011 60^th Birthday Ideas so far: Maui, Hilo, Hana, Las Vegas, Molokai, One Night Chinese Restaurant, Camp Somewhere in Cabins. Some of these locations or events came up as suggestions so far.

ALUMNI WEEK UPDATES

Aloha. It’s 817pm, we just PAU F.H.E. and I am sending this “dinner message” before going up for a bath!

Gretchen Ferreira DaFun, Class of 70 something, flew down just to hear Georgie Boy’s name read at the Sunday Memorial Service. She stopped and visited with us at the dorm.

Gretchen and her son Alika, age 23 a Kamehameha Alum also. Mahalo Gretchen!!

Just “hanging out” and talking story on the lanai at the dorm. That seemed to be one of the most fun and relaxing time for lots of us. Uncle Mike Chun stressed to “pace yourselves” and that was good advice. Watch the time. Saturday was Nancy’s birthday so when everything was all cleaned up, food put away, and under control, we sat down and talked story and played a few of her favorite tunes. That was very special. Her little grandson “Kamuakamakana”…..please let that be right…..it’s through memory only…..was able to visit with us along with Nancy’s ohana and close friends….it was special.

Warm up on Friday Night was the Electric Slide on the balcony portion. Within 10 minutes, the forces moves down to the floor. The band had a “huge” repertoire of music and they played for hours………

There was a song that was a hit. The lyrics stated “to the right, to the right, to the right….then to the left, to the left to the left, and kick, kick, kick…” It was so simple, even an attorney could do it.

Jocelyn “Laulani” Noa Donlin was ‘ripping’ up the carpet….those who danced had so much fun! Plenty work out and sweat!

While all this was going on, some people was eating, some talking story. The food was available all evening. The variety of food was so awesome. There was the salad section, dessert, and the main dish was a multitude of choices for everyone! What a job!! Where can you get all this for $20 a person? It was so “AURYTE!”

Oh what a night! Uilani, Pat, Randy, Pammy, Eda and Paul Apo! Just a few of the many who came.

Okay…gotta close for now but will try to get a message out tomorrow for breakfast.

What should we do as a class in 2011 when most of us turn 60 years old that year?

So far, we have about “11 people” that gave us some suggestions for a class get together in 2010 and 2011 Birthday. One suggestion came that we “REST” in 2010 and have our Birthday Party in 2011. There is no “wrong answer”……Just send it and we will review the list by the end of summer. Spoke to Nancy today and this is where we are headed for! Aloha to you all. IMUA69 OHANA....LUNCH BREAK UPDATES

It’s 12:24pm and it’s our lunch break!! Nothing better then to say ALOHA AGAIN!! I am having the hardest time focusing on work today thinking about this Magical Weekend that Faithy and I experienced. So excited, never asked the new attendees for their email addresses. I met “Toy” Leinaala Mau, Susan Akau, Paul Apo, Barbara Sawyer, Trudy Wong, Robert Kalaluhi, Victoria Souza, and a few more which escapes my mind right now.

Man, I just want to keep this Imua69 Ohana going…..moving forward. Which comes to my mind. Is there anything or anywhere that you would like to go next summer? I mean a Wed-Sun or Thur to Sunday event somewhere here in the islands? Can you share with us?

What about our 60^th Birthday in the year 2011? I started asking folks at the reunion about what we are going to do for our 60^th birthday. Believe it or not, some people want to come back to Moloka’i. Some people want to go to the Mauian on Maui and make sure that Jaime Lawrence can come and sing to us? One person said, “what about Las Vegas”…… One person liked Lanai. Do you have any ideas? No obligations, No guarantees. Just curious what you all want to do and then we can pass this on to Nancy and our class leaders.

On Friday, at 5pm, a small group of us were able to go to the Royal Mausoleum (Mauna’ala) hope that is right. We were taught some history by Wayne and Lurline, and we sang had pule and offered a ho’okupu to Bernice Pauahi Bishop.

It was a special time. We went back to the dorms and the music was playing already. We had a class meeting at the dorm and watched two DVD’S. One with photos and music of our class from the 7^th grade to the 12^th grade. The other special DVD was a “Remember Our Classmates” who have left this frail existence. It has been updated. There was a total of 23 men and 6 women on the list that we remembered at the Memorial Service on Sunday.

The music at the dorm was NON-STOP…From the oldies, to R&B, to Reggae, to slow romantic music. What a great job. We talked story and played music till about 230am……

Mahalo again. Will send one more on our dinner break. In the mean time. If you have ideas for 2010 and 2011 (60^th Birthday) please pass it on to us. I spoke to Nancy this morning….she is recovering. Spoke to Jan, she has recovered and Dan went to work. Spoke to Bobby Lu….she is going back on Wed…..her Neil missed her so much. Charley Soon!! One of our class inspirations! Hano Davidson….he came! They were there with us! Gotta run!

I had the opinions of XXXXX XXXX That’s nine of you. I started asking at the Alumni Week Reunion and this morning on the phone.

Kimo’s one liners was great. He walked about to someone and said, “Man you look 20 years younger…………..the a centurion…”

He was the one who said, He was so busy. He was thinking of calling in sick but he learned he was at work already.

There is so much more…he caused many of us to just laugh the night away!! Kimo “Tonto Kowalski” Spencer!

ALUMNI WEEK - 2009

What a weekend!!@! Mahalo to our Class Reps, Nancy and Wayne, to Nancy’s “Mike” and the Honolulu Action Committee of supporters! Our Dorm Luna Jan and her “First Assistant” Bruddah Dan who worked 24-7 in our behalf. To Jan’s dorm staff of workers who came in early to do support and maintenance. To Pat and Pam of PNP Enterprises for the many hours of tireless editing and putting together “Memories” which is a music slide show of our past, from 7th grade to our senior year. That was so awesome! The DVD of those who have gone past the veil with the great scenery and music! Mahalo! Mahalo!!

At our 35th Reunion, our class took 5 out of the 7 categories! You can tell from some of the presentation that we “raised the bar” and some of the classes were “gunning” to dethrone us. Our presentation this year went very well…Mahalo Wayne!

Our class took the “Most Traditional, Best Dressed (Or Costumed) and the Best Over-All” Presentation. On the front, Roz, Nalei and Nancy did the ‘noho hula’…musicians in the back of them from left to right……Me, Haunani, Dwight, George, Peter and Charlene…..the rest of the cast in the back. Wayne is standing on the floor to the left of photo.

Faithy and I arrived on Thursday and from the first time that we arrived, our lives were filled with joy, love and hugs and laughter, especially when Kimo joined us on Friday!!

We were at Kinau Hale, the same dorm that we were in 10 years ago. Food was always present, water, drinks…..it was awesome! We had a great turn out on class night! We watched the DVD of our time in school. The musicians were in place when we came back from Mauna’ala (hope this is correct) and they played “all night” literally…… Kimo was “on” with his one liners….

Plenty onolicious grinds…..So much variety….salad bar, sushi bar, desserts, and many options of main dish…..Mahalo Mahalo Mahalo!! We honored “Kauanoe” for the work that she has done over the years with the Hawaiian Immersion Program……

Get plenty to say but no more time! It’s 5:20am and I need to get to work. I was going to call in sick today but cannot….I at work already…. (Kimo one liners)

Mahalo also to Geri-Jo at the Alumni Office and the staff of many volunteers! The Luau was great. Pupu table was awesome! You could go back over and over.
